What a few readers have said:

"Excellent Book!!: I just finished reading this booki. It is awesome. If you have any interest in placer mining you will definitely enjoy it. It is a must read." Sharon McCleary

" . . . good read, especially if you have any interest in real frontier gold-camp life. Great research and accuracy by Joe. Very impressive. Took me back to the old days in that part of Idaho." Jim Raths

"I read it in two days. Couldn't put it down. It was very enjoyable." Dan Unruh.

"Your book was awesome! My words will not do it justice. If I thought mining was easy, I realize now, it is not. . . . You showed that the world has inherent goodness throughout it's many cultures as well as inherent evil." Linda
A couple of reviews:

"Dorris' story sheds light on the years immediately after the Civil War--an era that is forgotten in most modern accounts--when the country was still recovering from the trauma of the conflict. The tale is . . . an excellent insight into what it took to hunt for gold out West and the conditions in camps. Dorris is willing to take time in his writing to explain things to the fullest detail . . . . A quest for gold that will take readers on an enlightening tour of the 1870s West." Kirkus Indie

"Dorris' biology background and childhood memories of growing up in Idaho make the descriptions of the journey vivid and immediate. The reader can almost smell the evergreens and hear the rushing water. Along the way (Samuel) and a young Chinese boy, Sing Chen, become friends despite cultural differences and the prejudices of both the white and Chinese communities. Dorris has brought together a coming-of-age story and a litte known part of American history--the Chinese contribution to the Western Gold Rush. (Sojourner is) a thrill ride into gold country." Norma Engelberg, Pikes Peak Courier.

Thank you sincerely, Joseph.

Life in an 1870s gold camp at the end of the world in Idaho Territory is tough. It is even tougher for a teenage boy. Young Samuel Chambers finds out quickly that the country does not care how old he is . . . it seems intent on killing him anyway. Nor do the road agents who prey on the miners of Warren's camp and threaten Samuel's life, seem to care. And his youth does not preclude him from catching the attention of a dancehall lady, although it might explain his occasional mixed up feelings. But his age does preclude him from being hired on for more than a runabout and causes him to believe he is becoming a burden to his father.

During the Southern Uprising, Samuel's father, Charles Chambers, learns of a lost ledge of gold near the hardscrabble mining camp of Warrens. Charles takes Samuel and journeys sixteen hundred miles to the end of the trail, hoping to find the ledge and make a better life for his family they have left behind in Iowa. After meeting with abject failure, Charles reluctantly takes a job in a placer mine just to make grub.

Samuel is the family's one chance to find the ghost ledge. "The chips were on the table. Either he was going to find O'Riley's ledge, or by first snow they were going back the way they had come--empty handed."

Samuel discovers something other than a golden ledge. He develops a friendship with the only other teenager in the camp, a Chinese boy who is looking only to learn about Ahmelicah and earn enough gold to someday return to China. Not only does Samuel fight adversity in the gold camp, his beliefs and character are now put to test as he quickly learns not everyone is in favor of the strange Chinese and their curious practices.

Sojourner reveals the often bettersweet and difficult times for a teenager in a rough, rowdy, and romantic mid-ninteenth century gold camp as it also reveals the day-to-day struggles of men trying to carve a living from the land. It links historical events of the town of Washington in Warren's camp from 1871 during the clash of three cultures--the Sheepeater Indians, the Chinese, and the white miners. Sojourner reveals life as it was when the placer rush was dying and the quartz mines were beginning to boom. The supporting characters portrayed in the novel all lived during this time, and events surrounding them and mining at Warren's camp are authentic. The lost ledge is based on an actual ledge.

Sojourner is the second novel in a planned series of four on the Salmon River country of Idaho during the mid 1860s through the Sheepeater Indian War of 1879. Readers of Sheepeater: To Cry for a Vision will recognize the country, the historical times, and the contact Samuel inadvertently has with the Sheepeater Indians. The fourth novel will tie the series together as the main characters interact and clash in the events leading up to the Sheepeater conflict.
